An open letter to the nation's hairstylists

If a woman with three feet of hair comes in to your salon and asks to make a 10" donation to Locks of Love with a 2" trim that does not give you license to hack of 17", leaving said woman with hair that is unacceptably short.

You do not live in my universe, you are a visitor - I'm the one who has to live with your incompetence, with hair that is now too short to braid, too short to tie up without a ponytail elastic and too short to stay behind my shoulders when I lean over my sewing machine.

You suck and karma's a bitch.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
An open letter to my friends:

When you see me with shorter hair than I've had since primary school, you do not need to come up with an instant polite statement about how I look. I know I look awkward, I know this is weird, I know this is a violation of the natural order of the taraburse, but it's something we're all going to have to deal with for a few months until I can be my normal long-haired self again.

Yes, I will continue to donate to Locks of Love, but it'll take me three years for my next cut at this rate.

And, yes, I will accept wine and cookies in consolation.

Feeling awkward about one's hair cut takes me back to when I was a child and Mom gave me haircuts that she thought were good. Usually the bangs were VERY short and I grew up thinking that I had an ENORMOUS forehead. Turns out that my forehead is in proportion to the rest of my face but I have forever worn my bangs long because of the awkwardness of my childhood. Empathy in your diection.

Thanks, mim! I haven't had hair this short since the 1980s and really have no idea how to deal with it. It falls over my shoulders and into my way when I lean over my machine, I can't just twist it up into a knot anymore, and I'm accustomed to braids (not ponytails) and pony's make my scalp ache! This is definitely going to take some getting used to. . . .

Time to start loving barettes for awhile! So sorry to hear about your experience....but hey, I'm still jealous, I'll bet you've got alot more than me still! I dream of the day I can use a barette!!
Keep smiling...
