just a little something . . .

This was the product of a couple of those 'just have to do something, even if I don't know why' days.

One of the days involved painting scraps of wood, the other involved painstakingly cutting this cluster of leaves out of a wallpaper remnant.

They were not intending to come together, but then I had another one of those 'must glue' days and this was the result.

I'm really kind of tickled with it, and it has inspired my Artomatic contribution this year. I'm still working under the theory that I am going to have a job before mid-march, because AOM's expensive when you live this far from the district, but it is an awful lot of fun!

Artomatic 2009 - Ripple Effects

I took several ripply things to Artomatic and then hung them with some bad lighting, so I have bad photographs.

These are the best images I managed to come up with, which is a shame in and of itself:

Being me, I waited until the last minute to hang them, because I waited until the last minute to finish them, and didn't realise until it was unfeasible that I really ought to repaint the wall. Because just because you wanted a crisp white wall does not mean a crisp white wall was appropriate. I probably should have gone with my initial thought process, which was to paper the wall with back issues of the Times.

Artomatic 2009, the 10th anniversary of DC's roaming 'by artists, for everyone' event opens this evening at 5pm.





The address is 55 M Street SE, although if you just head down to the Navy Yard, come to the surface, and look around you won't be able to miss the place! Okay, it's hiding behind the Nationals Stadium, but the 9-story building is decked out in classic Artomatic Style.

This is what the building used to look like - there's so many banners and posters wrapped around the first floor right now, you can barely see the glass!

And now, I'd like to take a moment to apologize for my installation. I was aiming for minimalist (there's more white in my work this year than all other colours combined) but the overall effect is lame. Next year I will spring for better lighting and have learned the lesson that a plain white wall, even if it's what you asked for, is still never what you really want. I'm on the fourth floor, next to Matty Burns' charming astronaut deer.

Rebound Designs - One of A Kind Productions

The week before last at site selection for Artomatic, I finally met Caitlin of Rebound Designs. I first saw her work at Artomatic 2008, and while our paths have crossed at various shows and events, they hadn't previously intersected.

If you aren't familiar with her work, she also makes BagBook Purses, but instead of original art on modern books, she alters classic volumes, allowing the original cover art to speak for itself. She also offers more competitively priced wallets made from the reclaimed covers of modern paperbacks. I'm seriously considering asking for a custom wallet made from my first copy of Winter of our Discontent, which if you haven't read it is one of the quintessential classics of 20th Century US Literature and what are you waiting for?

Caitlin is preparing a new line for display at Artomatic 2009, on display May 29 - July 5. Items presented at Artomatic will be available for delivery after July 7 (that goes for me, too!)
